ESB Top 5 : Supermarket Bakes

Updated: Feb 1

Hello everyone!

I hope you enjoyed my latest post, the next ESB Musical Bake series, inspired by Anastasia, Princess Cake. To read the recipe and make it yourself, click here!

In today’s post, I want to share with you my top 5 shop bought bakes, to give you inspiration for the next time you pop to the supermarket!

Although of course, the best bakes are made at home in your own kitchen, there are times when you aren’t able to bake or you need a good alternative. This is my list of five of my favourites that are equal to or sometimes even better than what you could make at home. They are the bakes that I always return to consistently and give me pleasure every time I eat them.

To accompany this post, here is my cover of ‘My Favourite Things’ from The Sound of Music, which seems apt as this post is full of my favourite bought bakes!

So without further ado, here, in no particular order, are my top 5 shop bought bakes…

No. 1 : Waitrose Sourdough with Mixed Seeds Demi Baguette

My Thoughts

This sourdough bread is almost perfect for any sandwich or as an addition to a bowl of hot soup. It is the perfect chewy texture, topped with seeds that add a delightful crunch. I have returned to this bread many times and always feel excited when it hasn’t sold out in store. It goes particularly well with an oily fish such as smoked salmon and gravadlax because it is the perfect texture to complement the fish.

Enjoy with : Lashings of salted butter

How much : Each seeded sourdough is 70p each

Where to buy : Selected Waitrose stores with instore bakery

No. 2 : Specialite Locale Sultana Fingerellas

My Thoughts

These little cakes aren’t dissimilar to French madeleines, and are filled with juicy sultanas that make them the perfect accompaniment to an afternoon cup of tea. Slightly sticky and very moreish, they keep their moistness in the plastic packaging for a couple of days after they have been opened. A delicious treat, I reach for these fingerellas for a taste of France and they take me back every time!

Enjoy with : An afternoon cup of tea

Where to buy : Londis or other independent grocers and supermarkets

How much : £1.60 per packet

No. 3 : Cadbury’s Chocolate Fingers

My Thoughts

One of my favourite biscuits from childhood, Cadbury’s chocolate fingers are a nostalgic classic that are, in my opinion, unmatched by any other biscuit. A crisp finger of crumbly biscuit is coated in a thin layer of milk chocolate and it is a bake I would never attempt to make at home as the original are too good. The perfect anytime pick-me-up, chocolate fingers never disappoint in the sweet department.

Enjoy with :  A piece or two of crystallized ginger if you’re feeling fancy or just cold from the fridge

Where to buy : Most major supermarkets or corner shops

How much : A packet cost from £1 – £1.60 (depending on offers on at the time!)

No. 4 : Deli Kitchen Greek Style Flatbreads

My Thoughts

A slightly thicker wrap than the ordinary supermarket staple, these flatbreads are a delicious addition to any middle eastern feast with hummus or filled as an alternative sandwich. Full of flavour, they are fluffy and are a brilliant store cupboard essential to pair almost anything you like with.

Enjoy with : A middle eastern feast of hummus and other dips

Where to buy : Most major supermarkets

How much : A packet of four flatbreads costs £1.35

No. 5 : Sainsbury’s Jam Doughnuts

My Thoughts

Jam doughnuts are one of my favourite treats for anytime as they always make you feel better about the world. These doughnuts from Sainsburys are not only extremely good value for money but are particularly delicious, especially if you can catch them as they come out fresh from the instore bakery so they are slightly warm. Fluffy dough filled with raspberry jam – what could be better?!

Enjoy with : A cup of morning coffee or anytime!

Where to buy : Sainsburys stores with instore bakery

How much : A pack of five doughnuts costs 75p

Thank you for popping by my blog today to read my top 5 supermarket bakes! Let me know what your favourite supermarket bakes are in the comments.

See you next time for another tuneful post, but in the meantime,

Happy Baking!
